Opayo (SagePay) and 3D Secure... Action Required!

As of 1st January 2021, the use of 3D Secure v2 (also known as Strong Customer Authentication) became mandatatory in Europe. It becomes mandatory in the UK on the 14th September 2021.

» What is 3D Secure v2 Strong Customer Authentication (SCA)?

Opayo (formerly known as SagePay) have said that they will automatically switch all accounts using 3D Secure v1 to use 3D Secure v2 but they will not automatically enable 3D Secure on accounts that do not have 3D Secure enabled at all.

If your Opayo account is not enabled for 3D Secure and your website now attempts to take a payment from a payment card issued by a European Bank, even if that is for goods or services delivered within the UK, there is a strong possibility that the payment will be declined by the bank.

We strongly recommend that every client who is also an Opayo customer checks that 3D Secure is enabled on their account and, if it is not, take steps to enable it as soon as possible.

The Opayo SCA Hub (see link below) includes information on how to enable 3D Secure on an account.
